A mysterious epidemic is sweeping Central America - it's the second biggest cause of death among men in El Salvador, and in Nicaragua it's a bigger killer of men than HIV and diabetes combined. It's unexplained but the latest theory is that the victims are literally working themselves to death.
In the lowlands of Nicaragua, a region where sugar cane is the main occupation, sits the tiny community of La Isla. Most of the men are believed to have the mysterious illness-kidney failure. This illness is believed to have emerged form the dangerous insecticides and pesticides and herbicides that are routinely used on the farms. For the sever death of men,the locals have changed the name La Isla to La Isla de las Viudas meaning the Island of widows.
